Day 2: Sweat, Sunburn, and the Absolute Reality of Starting Over
If Day 1 is all about high energy, big promises, and that sudden surge of motivation, Day 2 is where the real work begins. It’s the day the adrenaline wears off, your muscles start whispering initial complaints, and you have to prove to yourself that Saturday wasn't just a random fluke.
I made a pact with myself: three intentional movement sessions a week, minimum. No excuses, no moving the goalposts. So on Saturday, 12 September, I packed my bag, pulled up my socks, and walked through the gym doors to keep that promise.
Here is the raw, unfiltered truth of how Day 2 actually went down—the good, the brutal, and the very pink.
Phase 1: The Gym Floor (And Respecting the Wobbly Knee)
Coming back into fitness while managing an injury is a massive head game. You want to charge in like a bull, but your body is screaming for caution. My right knee has been a proper nuisance lately, so the mission was clear: push hard, but play smart.
The Warm-Up: Kickstarted the session with a 5km spin on the stationary bike to get the blood flowing and warm up the joints without pounding the pavement.
The Main Event: Jumped onto the Ladder app for a Pilates-inspired HIIT session. Low impact was the name of the game here—protecting the knee while still getting that glorious, deep-muscle burn that makes you question your life choices halfway through a set.
The Heavy Lifting: Shifted over to the weights area for some serious leg work. Loaded up the leg press to 125kg and knocked out 10 sets of 10. By set eight, my legs felt like jelly, but pushing through that wall was absolute magic. Wrapped up the lower body with goblet squats, hip raises, and spent some quality time on the hip abduction machine.
Upper Body & Cool Down: Finished off the lifting portion with three sets of 10 lat pulldowns and three sets of 10 chest pulls on the machines just to keep things balanced.
To top off an hour and a half of sweat, I spent 10 minutes on the mat doing some deep stretching and yoga. I popped my headphones in, listened to my absolute favorite episode of the Pass Around the Smile podcast, and just let my heart rate come back down. Going from heavy lifting to complete mental stillness was easily one of the best parts of the workout.
Phase 2: The Wetlands Walk (And a Classic Aussie Blunder)
You’d think an hour and a half at the gym would be plenty for one day, right? Not quite.
After heading home, I grabbed our dog, clipped on the leash, and set off for a 5km walk around the local wetlands. It was stunning fresh air, the dog trotting along happily, and that quiet sense of accomplishment you only get when you're actively taking care of yourself.
Except for one massive, rookie mistake.
I completely, utterly forgot to put on suncream.
If you live in Australia and you have fair skin like mine, you already know how this story ends. The Aussie sun does not play around. It doesn't care about your fitness journey or your good intentions; it will roast you alive without hesitation. By the time we got back, I looked less like someone on a health kick and more like a fresh-caught cooked lobster.
Note to self (and to anyone reading this): never skip the Slip, Slop, Slap. You will burn like no tomorrow.
The Real Takeaway
I promised myself I’d keep this blog completely authentic. I’m not here to pretend every step is easy or that I look like a fitness influencer while doing it. I’m out here sweating through my shirt, wobbling through low-impact HIIT workouts to protect my bad knee, and nursing a fresh sunburn because I forgot basic sun safety.
But you know what?
I showed up.
I kept the promise I made to myself on Saturday, 12 September. My body feels used, my skin is currently radiating heat, but my mind feels clearer than it has in weeks. We’re laying the bricks one by one.
If you're currently trying to get your own body moving again—injuries, sunburn, self-doubt and all just keep going. It doesn't have to be pretty to be effective.
Catch you at Day 3 (with a full tub of aloe vera and a giant bottle of SPF 50+).
