When Your Mind Won’t Quiet Down: Finding Space Inside the Noise of Anxiety
Let’s drop the polished wellness act for a second. We’ve all seen the aesthetic social media posts telling us to "just breathe through it" or "do a 10-minute meditation." But when anxiety really takes hold, it doesn't feel like a mild inconvenience that a lavender essential oil can fix. It feels like your nervous system has pulled the fire alarm, but there's no actual fire in sight just you, sitting at your kitchen bench, holding a half-empty cup of tea while your heart races like you're sprinting the City2Surf.
Anxiety is sneaky. It doesn't just show up as worry; it shows up as exhaustion, as the sudden urge to clean the whole house at 11:00 PM, or as that heavy, persistent tight knot right in the pit of your stomach that refuses to shift no matter how many deep breaths you take.
For a long time, I thought having anxiety meant I was failing at life. I thought if I was doing "wellness" properly eating whole foods, getting outdoors, moving my body my brain wouldn't do these sudden, wild gymnastics. But here's the absolute truth: Anxiety isn't a character flaw, and it isn't a sign that you're broken.
Often, anxiety is just your body’s deeply primal, fiercely protective way of saying, "Hey, you’re carrying way too much right now, and I don't know where else to put it." It’s the buildup of every single time you said "I’m fine" when you weren't, every boundary you let slide to keep the peace, and every moment you put yourself last on your own list of priorities.
So, how do we navigate it when the storm rolls in?
Stop fighting the wave: The hardest part of anxiety is often the panic about the anxiety. The moment you stop wrestling with the feeling and simply acknowledge it "Okay, my chest is tight right now, my body feels unsafe, but I am actually okay" the grip begins to loosen.
Ground into the physical world: Put your bare feet flat on the grass or floor. Hold something cool, or sip a cold glass of water slowly. Bring your mind back out of the future and land it right here, in this exact second.
Give yourself unconditional grace: On the days when anxiety wins the morning, don't write off your worth. Lower the bar for what success looks like today. If all you did was survive the day and keep yourself fed and safe, that is more than enough.
You don't need to have your life completely figured out today, and you certainly don't need to fix your brain overnight. Be gentle with your nervous system it's doing the best it can with the world we live in.
